From half a row of worshippers in a borrowed room to a congregation of 500 every Friday — this is the story so far, and the people carrying it forward.

Why Harold Hill, why now

A community in need

Harold Hill is a busy suburban district of the London Borough of Havering, and one of the more deprived areas of the capital — yet its Muslim community has grown steadily, with no mosque of its own.

Top 10%

Harold Hill ranks within the most deprived 10% of areas across London.

31.5%

Of children locally are affected by poverty, above the London median of 22.6%.

Connected

Immediate proximity to the A12, M25 and A127.

Young

8 primary schools, 2 secondary schools and a sixth-form college.

Regenerating

Part of a long-term regeneration project led by Havering Council.

Provisioned

3 halal butchers, with several halal restaurants and takeaways.

Our journey

From half a row to five hundred every Friday

2011

A return, and the first lessons

Imam Muhammad Sabahul Haque returns to the UK and begins weekly lessons from his home in Harold Wood.

2012

The first Jumu'ah & Madrasah

Friday prayer and weekend Madrasah begin at the MyPlace community centre — half a row of worshippers, seven students.

2015

A charity is formed

ECYS is registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee, becoming a UK Registered Charity in 2017.

2019

A first dedicated space

ECYS leases a 1,000 sq ft unit as a Musallaa for daily prayers, classes and youth activities.

Today

Five hundred and growing

Three Jumu'ah congregations every Friday, one of Havering's main Madrasahs, and a building of our own within reach.

Resident Imam of Harold Hill · Chair of Trustees

Born in Harold Wood in 1982, the sole resident Imam in Harold Hill. Graduate of the Faculty of Hadith, Islamic University of Al-Madinah. Chaplain to HM Prison Service for over twelve years, family counsellor, and a registered foster carer with Havering Council.
